St Bonaventure - Spring is often tenuous in Olean. Those last few weeks in March and the first 3 of April, you are not sure if it will ever arrive despite what the calendar says. But if you are patient and you look carefully you will see signs of it and on occasion even be able to revel in it. The waiting really isn't about spring it's about us and our impatience. It really is here, you just have to find it.
Photographing spring in Olean is often just as hard as confirming its existence. There isn't much color yet and the chance of a snowstorm is as good as a chance for 65 and sunny. On a day at the beginning of April I went in search of proof of the existence of Spring in Olean. I was searching for something that would show the world that it can and does happen here.
The weekend started out with snow on the ground and my idea for a photographic proof might have faded but I think that what I have found for this virtual tour captures the essence of the best of spring in Olean....

For editorial balance, I wanted to show WNY after a snow storm from my point of view...and before all of the snow melted. Allegany State Park is one of the gems of Western New York. It's only 20 minutes from Olean and offers some of the best x-country skiing of any place on the East Coast. There are cabins, a warming hut and beautiful views.
The trails are regularly groomed and not heavily traveled. Skiing there after a snow storm is awe inspiring. For me the trails invoke all of the power of that beauty which is nature.

The West End has always been a great neighborhood. It was built up during the 20's initially by a large contigent of hard working German Catholics.
Tom Kinnaird's recent stories about his childhood there motivated me to create this virtual tour of one of Olean's great neighborhoods.

This just in from Tom:
Oh for Pete's sake! There are changes, but things are pretty much the way I left them almost FIFTY YEARS ago! "Our" house has a porch again. (My step-dad tore the old one off.) The Shakely place is the same as is the Phersdorf's (sp?) It's probably my imagination, but I swear I saw my bike's tire-tracks coming from the drive way. OLD Mr. Phersdorf's place is still set back from the street. I wonder who shovels the snow from the driveway and keeps the lawn mowed now my Mom isn't here to make me do it.

We are in the last few days of fall and they have been beautiful. I figured that I needed to post the last fall virtual tour before it was too late and we were covered by snow.
Here is a vitrual tour of Lippert Hollow in Allegany on a recent sunny fall day.

It has been a winter a little shy of great skiing weather. January was more like a romp on a sunny beach than a real winter around here. However the last three weekends in February have "found their winter traction" so to speak with good storms each of the three previous Saturday's.
Holiday Valley ramped up quickly and offered great skiing for the better part of February. Take a look at this virtual tour of Holiday Valley taken President's Day Weekend. It was sunny but cold and enough snow had fallen for some great skiing.
