    Announcements

The OHS Sports Boosters and the OCSD Foundation are calling for visitors, students and community members to sign up for the August 15-17 Gus Macker three-on-three basketball tournament. "It's a slam dunk weekend of fun that supports two organizations - Olean High School Sports Boosters and the Olean City School District Foundation," said John Irving, Olean Gus Macker Co-Chair. "It's definitely something we encourage people of all skill levels to participate in," he said. "The teams are set up to play against teams with like expertise."

Entry deadlines for teams interested in this year’s tournament are Friday, July 25 for applications that are submitted by mail, and Monday, July 28 for internet entries. To register on-line, go to www.macker.com or mail an application to Gus Macker Application, P.O. Box 70, Greenville, Mich. 48838. No faxed application forms will be accepted. The entry fee must accompany the team application, and can be paid by check or credit card. The entry fee for four player teams is $116. The two groups anticipate having over 300 teams and 10,000 spectators from a 100-mile radius to attend the 3-day event and see this as a great opportunity to showcase Olean.

The tournament will take place on Delaware Avenue and North Barry Streets in Olean, NY. The tournament, based on basketball played in driveways throughout the U.S., will include players who have no experience to those who have played college and semi-professional basketball. Primarily based on their age and level of experience, players will be placed in divisions where they will be most evenly matched. Depending on the number of teams placed in a specific division, players and the teams they’re on will be

playing for first- and second- and third trophies. Also teams that finish last in their divisions could receive “Toilet bowl” trophies.

Registrations forms are available at the Olean Family YMCA; Park Centre Development; Village Green; So. Tier Health Care System; Old Library Restaurant; Five Star Bank; Olean General Hospital; City of Olean Municipal Building; Olean Center Mall; Schachter Communications; WPIG-FM Radio Station; Mellon & Co. The City of Olean’s Annual Fourth of July FIREWORKS CELEBRATION is set for Friday, July 4, at Bradner Stadium in Olean. The fireworks are organized by the Olean Professional Firefighters Association, OPFFA. The stadium gates open at 5:30 PM. Coolers and packages carried into the stadium will be checked for security reasons.

City of Olean Firefighters took over the local fireworks program in 2001. Prior to that, the Dempsey Club (City of Olean Police Department) ran the fireworks. The fireworks have been held in Bradner Stadium since the early 1960’s. The actual fireworks program, not just the ground displays, were shot inside the stadium. However, due to the rising safety issues, the fireworks are now being shot from Forness Park. The ground displays are still shot inside the stadium, but at a safe distance away from the spectators. Young Fireworks of Rochester, New York, now shoot our shows. A wide range of shells are shot in their programs. The shells range from 1” shells all the way up to 10” shells. The 10” shells are the largest shell that can be shot safely in the area.

“The 2008 Fireworks Celebration will be a fun-filled evening of great music, mouth-watering food, family entertainment and socializing culminating with a spectacular fireworks show at dusk,” reports Dave Bauer, Olean Fire Department staff and co-chair of the Fireworks. Music will be provided by area bands, KG2, Two-Hour Notice, and Birdswamp Bob and the 4 Point Bucks, who will be performing inside the stadium starting at 6 PM. The WMXO-FM Radio Station, the fireworks broadcast sponsor, will be on hand and provide music to accompany the fireworks. Those watching the fireworks inside the stadium will be eligible for prizes such as amusement park tickets and a trip to a fun location, possibly Myrtle Beach or Nashville. In case of inclement weather, the fireworks will be scheduled for the next clear night. For more information, please visit the fireworks new website, designed by Mellon Technology, www.oleanfireworks.org.
